It used to be that if you were a bride who was not blessed with a svelte body shape then would you have difficulty finding a wedding dress to suit. Often the quest for the perfect dress would involve a visit to a specialist bridal shop and some extensive alterations. Not only was this not very convenient but could also be a rather costly exercise.

High Street Retailers
Nowadays, it has become much easier, partly due to the number of retailers operating on-line but also because many High Street retailers now offer their own bridal ranges in a more generous selection of sizes than before.
The average dress size these days is around the 16 mark and many retailers have woken-up to the fact that the plus size wedding dress market has been largely untapped. Many of the leading names are offering sizes from 12 to 22 and some specialist retailers now offer a 32 as a standard option.

This has been a real boon to brides of all shapes and sizes, not only because of the wider choice of styles and sizes available but also in terms of cost. It’s now possible to buy a quality wedding dress and kit-out the rest of your bridal party for less than it used to cost just for the dress.

Be Careful of Differences in Sizing
When first contemplating buying a wedding dress in plus sizes it’s a good idea to browse the various internet retailers first, just to get an idea of the styles available and the sizing options on offer.

Bear in mind also that sizes can vary considerably and, naturally, the larger the size – the more distorted this difference can be. Once you have found a style you like it’s generally a good idea to visit the store and try on a few styles you like. Not only will this give you an idea of how accurate the stores sizing actually is, but will also be an opportunity to experiment and see what suits best.

Alternatively, you could order on-line to try at home with the option to return the dress for a refund or exchange. This is obviously one of the benefits of buying on the internet and most retailers have very simple returns policies which accommodate this option very well.

Plan Ahead
If you are buying well in advance of the actual day then it can be wise to opt for a size above the one you need; it’s a lot easier to take-in an oversized dress than it is to take one out. You may well have set a target weight loss for the actual wedding date but ordering an undersized dress or one which fits too perfectly ahead of time is often a mistake. If you hit your target then a few alterations will be easier to arrange than it will a refund on a dress which is too small and been hanging in your wardrobe for six months?

Overall then, the choice of plus sizes is a lot greater than it used to be and the more research you do then the more options you’ll find. Try various styles before committing yourself and allow for the fact that you may need to make some adjustments nearer the wedding day. Above all, have fun choosing your dress and enjoy your wedding planning adventure.
