There are currently many different and wonderful wallpapers available designed specifically to be used in a child’s bedroom. Often the designs feature popular cartoon characters, football themes, racing cars, and ponies to name but a few.
Early examples of children’s wallpaper date back to the 19th Century and often featured illustrations of story characters of the age. Generally, the theme would be designed to have a positive effect upon a child’s active imagination.
Although the characters and number of designs has increased over the years, this general idea remains the same, with character based and illustrative designs continuing to be the most popular.
Washable Wallpaper
Nowadays, the actual wallpaper tends to be the vinyl, washable variety which is ideal where finger marks and general spillages may be a problem. This kind of paper is usually made from 2 layers – a paper layer at the back and a vinyl layer on top. Alternatively a water resistant coating is applied over a conventional wallpaper to add an element of wipe-ability.
Alternatives to Wallpaper
Alternatives to wallpaper include simply painting the walls with coloured emulsion, patterned borders, wall stickers and murals. These alternatives are ideal where you want to add some colour and pattern without it being over-bearing. This also provides an option for simple maintenance and redecoration at a later date.
Wall stickers can be bought in many colourful and exciting designs and often the kind of adhesive used means they can be removed and repositioned several times, which is ideal when it comes to redecorating.
Borders are also a useful alternative as they allow you to add a suitable design to a painted room in one simple and economical operation. Murals are ideal where space is at a premium and you want to make a feature of one particular wall. Although you can paint a custom mural yourself, they are also available to buy in wallpaper form and are remarkably easy to put up.
Trends
It’s easy to be influenced by the latest trends when choosing wallpapers for your child’s room but you should think long term, particular with some of the more expensive designs. A well thought out design and carefully applied decoration should last for several years, so think carefully whether this year’s favourite cartoon character will be just as popular in 3 or 4 years time?
Have Fun
The most important thing to remember when decorating your child’s room is to enjoy the process of selecting the right designs and colours and for you and your child to have fun when painting and decorating their special room.
