I recently heard a story about a young man, an excellent musician, who had it made very early on. But he drank a lot, as did his friends and band members, and it set his career back many years. Unfortunately, he didn’t get help from an addiction treatment center years ago when he first needed it. Had he done so, things would no doubt be far different now. If you’re looking for a way to demonstrate the effects of alcohol, tell his story to your kids.

When this young man was 15, he started a band. He was the lead singer, as well as writing and arranging most of the tunes. Within about six months he had more gigs than he could count.

Early on, one of his shows was attended by a rep from a big record company. The rep called it one of the most electrifying performances he’d ever seen and offered him a recording contract.

But nothing ever happened with it because the band broke up - largely because of alcohol. The young man drank a lot, usually binge drinking, and the change in his personality when he was drinking caused a lot of arguments with the band members.

Similar things happened with the next three bands – drinking at rehearsals and shows, arguments with band members, members dropping out, and recordings that just didn’t cut it.

He wasn’t the only one who drank; with the exception of the members of the first band, they all did.

Although they are all still involved in music one way or another, and occasionally play around town, not one of them has yet even reached the point of being able to make a living at it. They all have jobs that pay the rent, none of them are happy with their work, and they try to make time for their music when they’re not working.

All of them are frustrated, and now they’re all nearly 30. Many years have passed them by – talented youngsters who had the world by the tail, whose dreams have yet to be realized because of alcohol.

The young man is finally getting it together; he’s accomplished a lot in the last couple of years and has realized the role alcohol has played in his life. He has also realized that, although he’s learned a lot about music and developed as a musician in many ways over the years, alcohol has caused him to lose 15 years of his chosen career.

Alcohol addiction has ruined many lives – this is just one example, one story. Not of a life that’s been completely ruined, not of someone who’s life has been shortened, not of bankruptcies, broken families or domestic violence.

It’s about very talented people who are now looking back on the last 15 years and realizing they blew it.

If you have a friend, or son or daughter, who wants to accomplish their goals but is also drinking, help them get into an alcohol rehab program sooner rather than later. Until that’s done, there’s a good chance nothing else will be.
