We have all heard the saying at one time or another –“it’s not what you know, but who you know,” and as cliché as it may sound, it is one of the sincerest sayings around, because there are a lot of people that find themselves getting by simply on making the right connection, and not necessarily because they were deserving to be where they are today, or maybe it was both their tenacity and who they knew coupled together, but knowing the right person probably was the biggest component.
Networking is critical in this day in age, because nudging the right person, could change your life forever. Ever worked on something for so long – put your heart and soul into it, and you just could not get ahead with the project, though you found yourself really giving it everything that you had, then, you meet that one person, that helps you get to heights that you never imagined that you would reach? Maybe this isn’t your story, maybe you have put your heart and soul into a project, and still have not reaped the benefits of all of the hard work, and you still haven’t found that one person to ‘know’ that could help take you to the next level, but the reality is, that even if you never meet the right person to help push your project along, you have to continue with what you know, as that, too, can pay off.
I was watching the reality show, The Kardasians, on last week, and it was an episode where the sister called in a favor to one of her college buddies, and she immediately was able to get her brother into a paid intern position. It just shows that knowing people in high places can really make your life a lot easier, in some cases, rather than having to go through the ‘rat race,’ as some people might call it, though I do not look at it as a ‘rat race,’ but as an opportunity to make you stronger as a person, because getting it solely on your own merits is also a great victory.
The aforementioned has been stated to say this; Where ever you go, always make a connection, and treat people equal, because you never know who you may be talking to – yes, they could look as if they are someone that does not have any clout, and they could be the owner of the company. You should always know your job or be the best in whatever endeavor and project it is that you have, while building great relationships with people. If you never make a connection, that is fine, too, as there are a lot of people that simply never met anyone, but managed to become successful. Stand firm with ‘what you know,’ so that when that ‘who you know’ person comes along, if they ever come along, you will be many steps ahead of the game.
