In modern Britain there are more and more people that are choosing to cycle, as opposed to using an automobile. People use bicycles to commute to work. This saves them a great deal of money and, in busy cities, time. The cost of petrol just gets higher and higher and so plenty of money can be saved by using a bicycle. Some people grow increasingly concerned about the state of the environments and so therefore feel that they are doing their bit to save the world, by cycling places instead of driving.
If a bike is compared with a car then there is no contest when it comes to the amount of protection that one offers in relation to the other. If a car collides with a bike then there is very little chance of the person in the car being injured in any way. The person on the bike however is particularly vulnerable, and people that get hit by cars when on bikes can sometimes be killed. Of course, people in cars do not mean to collide with cyclists, and it is often the result of not paying enough attention to the fact that there may be a cyclist using the road.
If you get knocked off your bicycle and are not in immediate danger, like the middle of the road, then you need to stay as still as possible until a paramedic arrives. Any movement can result in injuries being made considerably worse. If you can still function with relative normality, subsequent to an accident, then you need to get details from the other person that has caused the collision. The name, number and address of the person is essential, as well as the make, model and registration of the vehicle. If there are any witnesses then their details should be taken as well.
It is the duty of the police to get the details of the driver if the victim has to be taken immediately to hospital. It is important that the police do this as the information will be used as important evidence when it comes to making a personal injury claim: the information gathered by the police will be made available to the personal injury solicitor that represents the victim.
It is never going to be a case of nobody ever getting knocked from bikes by cars but it is something that can be kept to a minimum. If a person is wearing a helmet, and also protective pads, then they are less likely to be as badly injured as they would be were they not wearing protection. People on bikes should also do all that they can to make sure that people in cars can see them. This means that high visibility clothing should be worn, and that also lights should be on whenever it starts to get dark.
