In order to limit the number of races that were part of the Formula One Championship from 18 to 17, the San Marino Grand Prix had been taken out of the list following the return of Belgium but San Marinos’ Circuit at Imola might return next year to the pilot’s itineraries.

The decision of increasing the number of races again was made in Paris during a meeting held between the motor racing’s governing body representatives: FIA, manufacturers and people from all the F1 teams. The decision was unanimous.

Imola’s circuit must have some improvements and renovations to the pits and to the paddock as well as the creation of new access roads around and in the circuit if they want the race to reprieve. In case the racetrack is not ready in the required time frame another track could be chosen to host the race.

San Marino is the nearest Grand Prix circuit to Ferrari's center of operations and earlier this month, the team’s president Luca di Montezemolo asked the F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone to reprieve the race.

Just three weeks ago, the FIA, provisionally announced a 17-race schedule for the year 2007. This schedule didn’t include the San Marino event. The modification left a space of four weeks between the races in Bahrain and Spain on April 15th and May 13th, respectively. San Marino would ordinarily have fit in the middle.
