There are many forms and genres of glamour photography available nowadays. Generally speaking you could best describe glamour photography as where the subject is female and various techniques such as lighting, make-up and retouching are combined to produce a final image which is visually attractive.
This type of photography has become increasingly popular of late, particularly in the areas of boudoir photography and glamour make-overs. The growth of men’s magazines (or lad's mags) has also fuelled the interest with shots portraying models and celebrities in alluring poses as an alternative to the more traditional cover-girl image we are accustomed to. Other forms of portraiture, such as pin-up, can also be included within the general heading of glamour photography.
Often women are put-off the thought of posing for a glamour photo-shoot because of pre-conceptions they may already have. Admittedly, there is a lot of confusion in the market and, in reality, there is a style and type of glamour photography to suit everyone.
Boudoir Photography
The concept of boudoir photography is the creation of a sensual image without actually resorting to nudity. Often this is achieved by posing in lingerie or a state of partial undress. Sometimes the subject poses nude but is partially obscured by shadow, created with a combination of imaginative lighting and digital editing techniques.
Pin-Up Photography
The pin-up style of photography originated in the 1930’s and has enjoyed something of resurgence of late. Classic pin-up images were originally used extensively in calendars and poster art but now the genre tends to be associated more with the burlesque or vintage style of glamour imagery.
Nude Photography
Although a genre of its own, nude imagery is something which a lot of people associate with glamour photography. Nude photography is an acceptable form of art though the genre is somewhat tarnished as a result of its association with the more gratuitous forms of nudity that we have become accustomed to. There are however still a number of talented photographers who are able to demonstrate that nude photography is an art form in its own right.
Make-Over Photography
Perhaps the most popular and accessible form of glamour photography is the ‘make-over experience’? Usually involving a hair and make-up session the classic make-over will conclude with a photo-shoot creating a set of images which show the subject at her absolute best. Often purchased as a gift for a loved one, a make-over session is also a pampering indulgence bought by women for themselves.
Overall then, there are many kinds of imagery represented under the broad term of glamour photography and often it’s just a case of viewing what’s on offer in order to find a style or type of image that you would be comfortable to pose for.
Most photographers will have a portfolio of images on their website which represents the type of imagery they specialise in. Some photographers will focus on one particular style while others will have a more general approach.
As with any other kind of portraiture or photography, take your time and ask questions if you are not sure. Most photographers are used to dealing with nervous clients and will be glad to help you.
