Internet became a mainstream in many parts of the world. As there is a continuous growth in Internet usage, the number of websites on the Internet is also increasing. According to VeriSign, 24 million domain names registered in 2008 globally, resulting to 177 million total domain registrations worldwide by 2008 yearend.

Domain names increased by 24 million globally in 2008
According to VeriSign report, 24 million TLDs are newly added to the total domain name registrations increasing the total base to 177 millions. This is 16% growth over the previous year and 2% growth compared to Q3 2008. Total ccTLDs registrations increased to 71.1 million by 2008. This is 22% increase compared to the previous year and 3% growth compared to Q3 2008.

11.5 million domain name registrations added for Q3 2008
The number of new domain name registration across all TLDs in Q3 2008 was 11.5 million. This is 2% low compared to Q2 2008 and 2% low compared to Q3 2007. Composition of domain name industry and ranks that shifted to .cn surpassed .de and became second largest TLD.

68.9 million domain names in ccTLDs in Q3 2008
Domain names registered in ccTLDs grew to 68.9 million in Q3 of 2008 and this represents a 5% growth from Q2 2008 and 26% growth over the same period in 2007. From same period in last year, 76% increase for .cn, 8% increase for .de, and 14% increase for .uk. These three ccTLDs contributing 44% to the total ccTLDs base registrations. Top 10 ccTLDs contribute 66% of total ccTLD’s domain registrations.

6.9 million new registrations in .com and .net in Q3 2008
Averagely 2.3 million new domain registrations added in .com and .net every month and total registrations were about 6.9 million in Q3 2008. There is 9% decrease in registration compared to last quarter of 2008 and 8% decrease in over the same period of last year. Overall, base of .com and .net domain names were 89.4 million at end of Q3 2007 and increase of domain names in .co and .net is by 2% and 16% from last quarter.


This gives an overview of increase in domain registrations worldwide in the last year. With increase in global Internet penetration and increase in online businesses, domain name registrations continue to increase in the future.
