Camping is all about getting away from the stress of everyday life. Just being out in nature with your friends and family can really help to relax you. Whether hiking, fishing or just sitting around the camp fire this is a great time to catch up with the people closest to you.

Depending on your level of expertise, the amount of camping equipment you will want to bring will vary. For example an ultra light backpacker will only bring the essentials. Each item will be handpicked as weight is very important. For a fun and more casual camping trip with friends or family you many want a bit more comfortable set up. I’ve got five tips for camping that will hopefully make your next trip more enjoyable.

Before leaving be sure to double check and make sure you have the essentials. Your tent, sleeping bag, food and water, and a source of fire are all very difficult to do without. With those items secured don’t worry too much about the small stuff. If you are only going for a few days chances are you’ll be fine. If you absolutely need an item you can likely find a store within a short drive of your campsite.

Don’t bog yourself down with unnecessary electronics. First, it defeats the purpose of going camping in my opinion. Second, they could easily get ruined in unexpected weather. A radio, a phone for emergencies, a gps unit, and a camera should be more than enough for a camping trip.

Check with the campground or state park beforehand so you and your party are aware of any fees or restrictions. On one of my last trips to a state park the weather had been so dry that there was a fire ban. Luckily we knew ahead of time and found a section of the park that had approved fire rings. That basically saved our trip, no one wants to camp without a fire.

On the topic of campfires, be sure to get enough fire wood. I frequently underestimate the amount I will need as I usually stay up late. Buy extra and leave what you don’t use for the next campers.

This final camping tip is very important, please clean up after yourselves. There is not much more disappointing than coming across a trashed campsite. Please be respectful of your surroundings as well as your fellow campers.

These five tips for camping should help make your next camping trip more enjoyable. So remember to be safe and have a great camping trip!
