The term ‘usability’ in Web site design language refers to ‘putting Web users at priority.’ The term gained more significance as the concept of search engine optimization (SEO) became more complex. Web site designers are facing great difficulty in designing a Web site that is equally appealing to both users and search engines. However, considering the user-friendly aspects of search engine algorithms, we can say that a user-friendly Web site design will automatically result in a search-engine friendly design. Those who have understood the nuances of search engine algorithms can design a Web site that also provides the best usability.
The first criterion in designing a ‘usable’ Web site is to create a user-friendly design. The layout or the architecture of the Web site can play a significant role in inviting better users to it. A usable layout refers to having easier access to the contents and the links provided in the Web site. The home page of the Web site should have the links to all important pages of the Web site. At the same time, it should not look too cluttered. A cluttered design is highly distracting and will turn the users away. A user-friendly Web site should have a navigation page wherein all links are given in an organized manner. This would help users reach the desired page quickly.
Content of a Web site plays an important role in deciding its usability. Having a user-friendly content is essential for any Web site. The contents provided in your Web site are the actual lead of your Web site. They should be able to convince the customers about the services and offerings of your company. A simple and easy-to-understand content is preferred by all users. If you use complex language and convoluted style for communicating to your customers, the result will be negative.
Another important aspect of a usable Web site design is its easy ‘accessibility.’ If a Web site is not easily accessible, it cannot be of any use to the end user. A Web site designer has to pay special attention to these details. Use of Flash and multimedia contents should be limited. There should be less number of forms and tables. The simpler the design is the better is its accessibility.
To summarize, a Web site design should wholly focus on the interests of the end user. The content, layout and design should also conform to the requirements of the user as well as the search engines.
