A flight attendant is the airline’s face, as they are the people who come in direct contact with the commuter. The law makes it mandatory for all major airline operators to provide flight attendants for the safety and security of flight passengers. There is a great scope in this profession as a growing number of people are traveling nowadays, creating demand for more airlines and thus, airline-related jobs. But the competition is equally stiff, as a huge number of youngsters seek to be flight attendants.

The basic qualification for the job is a high school diploma. The aspirants are required to apply to the airline operators. From here, they are picked after interviews. The airline companies have set parameters for physical features like height and weight and selections are made accordingly. Also, they prefer people, who have a pleasing personality and good communication skills. Knowledge of other languages and any experience in dealing with public is an added advantage. To acquire these skills and to fare well in airline interviews, the candidates usually attend courses at special air-hostess academies. This prepares them for the interaction and increases their chances of selection.

On being picked up by an airline, they need to undergo special training. The training usually takes place at the headquarters of the airlines. The training mainly focuses on safety of passengers, but also includes many other aspects of the duties of flight attendants. Safety training comprises of checking for security measures; delivering first aid and serious medical aid such as defibrillation, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); dealing with in-flight crisis like firefighting, decompression; managing emergencies like passenger evacuation, use of evacuation slides etc. Candidates are also trained in survival techniques in varied circumstances like sea, desert, snow etc.

Dealing with the passengers and ensuring their comfort is the other part of the training. The flight attendant is educated to look after the needs of the passengers and make them comfortable during the course of the journey. Personal grooming is strongly emphasized upon, during training. A female flight attendant is taught the right use of cosmetics to enhance her looks. A flight attendant is always required to look pleasant, neat and active. The training may last for a minimum of six weeks or a maximum of six months, depending upon the kind of aircraft used by an airline company.

The job of a flight attendant has a large number of attractions. They are entitled to many discounted-fare flights and a free flight each year. While on duty, they also get to visit many parts of the world, and spend some memorable time. They get luxurious hotel stays at halting points and also get special privileges in availing the services of the hotel. They get special discounts at various food joints at airports. They meet a vast array of people and sometimes have celebrities in the list of their patrons.

So, if you are passionate about flying and are committed to customer service, you can be a flight attendant. It is an extremely exciting, rewarding and satisfying profession.
