It may seem like anxiety and depression do not have much in common. However, the truth is that the two usually come together.

According to mental health experts, over half the people diagnosed with anxiety also have depression. Many of the symptoms of these two mental illnesses overlap. Further, according to studies, both also share common brain mechanisms.
Depression and anxiety, as individual illnesses, are very difficult to endure. The combination is even more severe and painful. Depression makes people feel very hopeless and sad. Anxiety makes them feel irritated. It gives them various physical symptoms like rapid heartbeats, breathing difficulty, and more. People with both conditions feel very overwhelmed and unmotivated. They also suffer from their racing minds and restlessness. Further, the combination makes recovery a challenge. People who are diagnosed with both depression and anxiety tend to have some level of functional impairment. They also have difficulty locating the right treatment. Further, they are at a higher risk for suicide. Some depressed people have a distinct anxiety disorder, while others have more general anxiety symptoms that come with their depression.
When it comes to the treatment of the anxiety and depression combination, there are many different approaches. Some mental health experts try to distinguish the prevalent issue and try to resolve it first. Others try to treat both at the same time. Fortunately, many treatments help both illnesses. These can be used in different ways. The ways to treat depression and anxiety include:

Therapy: When it comes to therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) works best for depression and anxiety. This technique helps identify and change behavior and thought patterns. Depressed and anxious individuals have distorted thinking when it comes to people and the world, in general. CBT seeks to reveal the ways of negative thinking and helps develop new and positive thoughts.
Antidepressants: With a name that refers to depression, these drugs are helpful in treating other conditions, too. They also help alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders. It is very important that you get the right kind of medication for your conditions, as some antidepressants may increase levels of anxiety. SSRI antidepressants work well for the depression and anxiety combination, as do SNRIs. If these drugs do not work for you, you may need to try tricyclic medications.
Anti-anxiety medication: Drugs like benzodiazepines can quickly relieve the symptoms of anxiety. Many doctors are not enthusiastic about prescribing them for the long term, because of the potential risk of addiction or abuse.
Other medication: Some other types of medication might help. Some people with depression and anxiety may react positively to mood stabilizers, antipsychotic drugs, and antiepileptic drugs along with their antidepressants. Further, medications that help with sleep may alleviate disturbed sleeping patterns.
Lifestyle changes: People with depression and anxiety should eat healthy, get enough sleep, exercise, and refrain from consuming alcohol or taking leisure drugs.
