Google’s PageRank (PR) refers to a scale that rates a Web site from zero to ten, ten being the best. A higher PageRank indicates that the Web site will be at the top of the search results in a search engine page result (SERP) when someone searches for the keywords in your Web site. In short, a PageRank is an indication how popular a Web site is and it is one of the important criteria in search engine optimization (SEO).

PageRank is a set of algorithms that determines how important a Web page to a user is. It clearly indicates how well the Web site is optimized for the end-user. PR is determined by a number of factors. The most important among them is the nature of the inbound links. SEO experts say that “the PR of a Web site is determined more by the quality of the inbound links than the quality of the Web site itself.” If your Web site is able to get links from a popular Web site, you could gain a good PR. This fact points towards the importance of effective link building.

Several aspects have to be considered while planning for link building. Not only is the popularity of the Web site, but its relevance also has to be considered while picking them as your linked sites. Google supports links that can complement the contents of a target Web site. They do not encourage link farms, which are created to gain sudden traffic. Google penalize sites with link farms. The PageRank clearly indicates that Google is capable of determining which Web site should come where. The PR algorithm is appraised as one of the best strategies of Google.

By linking to Web sites that have low PR, you would be sacrificing your Web site’s popularity. Before linking to a Web site, you need to analyze its PR. You can check the PR of a Web site by using online PR checking tools. If the Web site that you are planning to link has a PR0, you must avoid it. A PR range above 4 is accepted. Also, make sure that the Web site linked shares relevant contents as that in your Web site.
