Nothing is more annoying than a cluttered kitchen. If you're counter spaces are anything like mine, then they are overflowing with bags, loaves of bread, and everything else under then sun. The problem is just seems like I don't have enough room to store everything.

Our kitchens are often some of the most challenging areas to organize just because so much happens in this busy room. Kitchens are normally the gathering spot of homes as people wait for their dinners to be pulled from the soapstone stove in anticipation of eating a delicious meal. Not only do we eat in the kitchen but it's also where we open our mail, help the kids with their homework, and throw our keys as we walk in the door after work. It's easy to see how a soapstone counter can get covered in clutter.

So how do you get this unorganized kitchen back under control? Here are a few kitchen organization tips that may help:

Start small
Since getting your kitchen more organized is one of the bigger home challenges, my recommendation is to start with a small area and work your way out from there. Clean off the area of your soapstone counter you use most and then keep going. Next, move to the kitchen table or maybe the island where everything gets dumped. It's very important to remember to keep this newly organized area stays that way before you move onto something else.

Too much stuff
Much like other home organization projects, your kitchen involves throwing out a great deal of junk and other items you no longer use. If you come across any item at all that either is covered in dust or you can't remember yourself ever using, it is safe to say, and you can throw it away. This isn't limited to just your junk drawer, either. Throw away pots, pans, dishes and utensils if you no longer have a use for them.

One other point about going through your stuff is to not forget about canned goods, spices and packaged foods. If an item is expired, you need to throw it away. If you do not use it or like it, throw it away or donate it to your local food shelf. This is especially true of spices. We tend to gather and collect spices that we never use.

Counters are not storage areas
As you go through your kitchen, try to keep your soapstone counter clean and clear of everything. This little trick offers no benefits and only makes your kitchen appear to be cleaner. Your soapstone counter is not extra storage space. Don't use it as such. Appliances which are not used daily can be kept in cabinets and not on counters.
