Many parts of the world are heading towards the mobile age where people can stay connected with others through the use of portable devices. Cell phones served as the entry point to that age and throughout the years, cell phones have been constantly improving in features and design to serve their users in more ways than one.

Beginning as a device used for calling, cell phone makers have been adding additional functionality such as the ability to send SMS messages and then later on sported colored screens and had camera functionality. Now cell phones are shown to rival older models and most recently PDAs and gaming devices since many of the new models have various applications and functions for personal and business purposes. Touch-screen technology has also been successfully implemented to the latest cell phones for better control and user interaction.

However, the growth of these cell phones doesn’t stop there because the competition of various cell phone makers still goes on. Here is what you can expect in the future from these top cell phone makers.

Improved Camera Features

Sony has recently showed off their new Sony Ericsson sporting a whopping 12 megapixel camera just months after they revealed their first phone having 8 megapixels, which lead to other cell phone makers releasing models of their own. Some of the cameras sport some features that are widely used in regular digital cameras like face recognition and geo-tagging. It is expected that the video capabilities, flash, and lens improve in the near future.

Better Power

Samsung has been doing research of their own by revealing their first solar powered camera that uses a touch-screen interface. The phone is fitted with solar panels at the back that can recharge the battery on sunny days making it independent from traditional charging methods. There is also ongoing research of a universal charger that has a similar concept with USB technology allowing a single charger to power phones regardless of the model or brand. Energy conservation for the sake of the environment is a top goal for various organizations and cell phone makers are on a strong stance to help by making their future models more environmental friendly.

Enhanced Online Connectivity

Nokia has also surprised its fanbase by unveiling a phone that has a full keyboard and various widgets that interact with online e-mail services and social networking sites. This has caused the cell phones to take on the role as small computing devices. With all the top makers going that direction, cell phones may one day rival the netbook and laptop industry.

Increased Storage Capacity

With the release of the iPhone 3G, Apple has proven that cell phones can really have high storage capacities and new memory cards offering even higher capacity have recently found their way to cell phones. With terabyte hard disks already making their way to laptops, it is expected for cell phones to have more memory to store just about all forms of multimedia real soon.

The future of cell phones is very bright as the year slowly moves to 2010. These enhancements will vastly improve the productivity and convenience of all users as they stay connected with each other in this digital world.
