Yes, is the answer if the audience reaction is any indication. You can track the trend way back to the times of Charlie’s Angels to get an idea about audience reaction. The TV series that ran successfully from 1976-81 was way ahead of its time. Charlie’s Angels were three powerful and independent women working for a private detective agency. The program was a trendsetter; a first to see women take charge in a genre that was made purely for men. ABC network had one of its most successful shows at that time.

Quite similar is Charmed, with its plot revolving around three women. Based on the supernatural/humor/horror theme, it had loads of action to keep the adrenaline flowing. The show became quite a cult and developed a very active fan base. Women loved watching people of their ilk kick some butts, and men took pleasure watching three really good-looking women. Charmed was the first of the supernatural kind to successfully run the longest time on television. It paved way for the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an Emmy Award winning show that ran from 1997-2003. People absolutely loved watching Buffy go after vampires, and also dug her romance with Angel, the good vampire. Time magazine included it in its ‘100 Best TV shows of All Time’. That’s quite something for a show with a female action protagonist. The marketing in-charges of the series were initially apprehensive about the audience reaction to a blonde as a vampire slayer. Well it all seemed quite unwarranted if the results are anything to go by. The show’s success inspired a spin-off called Angel, with Buffy’s vampire friend as the main protagonist this time.

Other female action-based shows that saw the same kind of response are Xena: The Warrior Princess and La Femme Nikitha. All these shows have their TV episodes online as well. Their popularity is a reflection of changes in attitudes and beliefs. So yes, female action heroes have really proved to be quite revolutionary.
