Advantages of painting the pool are decorative, seamless, easy to clean, long lasting. Compared to tiles, paint offers a seamless finish, no tile joints to get dirty, and no tiles to fall off. There are three different types of Texas swimming pool coatings like the epoxy, acrylic and rubber based.

Epoxy paint is long lasting, durable, can withstand UV rays, and chemical treatments. These can last for about 7-10 years. Epoxy paints are referred to as “Marine Paint”. This type of paint is divided into two parts, the resin and hardener. Most epoxies mix at a rate of one to one to form a resin. Over time, epoxy film will become chalky. The cost per year of epoxy paint is lower when compared to chlorinated rubber. It has extensive color range. It needs to sand to recoat. It has a hard surface. It is virtually solvent free. It yellows slightly to UV exposure.

Chlorinated Rubber base is not as expensive or durable as epoxy paint. It is easy to apply, comes in many colors and will last about 3-5 years. Chlorinated rubber base paint is highly resistant to salts, acids and alkalis. It can be dried fast. It has excellent recoat ability. It has excellent water immersion resistance. Chlorinated rubber is not for use on spas or whirlpools. Chlorinated rubber is mostly designed for commercial use where pool maintenance is performed every few years. It has a higher cost per year when compared to epoxy paint. It has limited color range. It is easy to recoat. It whitens slightly to UV exposure. It has a soft surface. it has a highly solvent content.

Acrylic coating can be used on any type of surface, is easy to apply, and cleans up with water. This type of coating is ideal for commercial applications that are repainted on a regular basis. It lasts for about 2-3 years. Acrylic swimming paint does not require a hardener or catalyst system like epoxy paint does. This paint is polymer resin, but a lot of pool paints are water based. This means that the paint is suspended in water, not oil. This is much easier for the homeowner to apply since the fumes are not as strong as they would be with oil based paint. Most acrylics are a satin or flat finish and will stain easier than solvent paints. Because of the nature of the acrylic paint surface, the service life of acrylic water-based paint will wear faster than chlorinated rubber or epoxy type paints.
