Hollywood loved the grapefruit diet. It first came to fame in the 1930's when many stars used it. Then in the 70's it became a piece of fax junk, sent from machine to machine, commonly known as xerox lore. The Mayo Clinic, which is often credited as the diet's creator, claims to have nothing to do with the unhealthy diet.
Originally the grapefruit diet was an Atkins style diet that added one half grapefruit before each meal. There are no snacks allowed on this strict three meals a day diet. The diet claimed that people could lose 10 pounds in 10 days, or 5 pounds in five days. It is also commonly claimed that a dieter might not lose any weight on the first four days but then 5 pounds would magically drop off on the fifth day. It was based on the claim that grapefruit contains fat burning enzymes, something that has never been proven.
In 2004 a scientific study determined that it is possible that the grapefruit diet helps people lose weight. Eating ½ grapefruit prior to meals helped people in the study lose 3.6 pounds in twelve weeks. Those who drank the serving of grapefruit juice at each meal lost just slightly less weight in the same period of time. A few of the participants lost an astounding 10 pounds. The doctor who conducted the study found that the grapefruit diet seems to reduce levels of insulin. But the study didn't limit people to just diet, they also exercised more which may have resulted in the weight loss.
The grapefruit diet works like this:
- Drink eight servings of water a day.
- Eat only until you are full at each meal.
- Eat every item of food listed for each meal because the menus are formulated to burn fat.
- Grapefruit is a catalyst that starts fat burning. Do not change the amount of grapefruit.
- One cup of coffee can be consumed at each meal.
- Never eat between meals.
- Butter can be used.
- Do not eat desserts, breads, white vegetables, or sweet potatoes.
- Meat and vegetables are fine.
- Eat until full in order to maximize weight loss.
- Follow the diet for 12 days, skip two days, then start again.
- Eat one half grapefruit, or drink 18 ounce glass of grapefruit, with each meal.
Give the grapefruit diet a try.
