Today’s challenging business environment, difficult global economic conditions and rising competition has made it necessary for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt new and advanced technological tools.

In recent times, small units are increasingly laying thrust on upgrading their production tools and resorting to modern technologies. Cloud computing services, software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, customer resource management (CRM) applications and virtualisation and network solutions are gaining precedence among SMEs.

Given the market volatility and stiff competition, small businesses are giving importance to the need for evolving technologically superior methods of product development. Furthermore, the realisation of having a strong technological base and the willingness to restructure operations are some other factors prompting small units to resort to sophisticated technologies. A large number of SMEs are aggressively investing in the deployment of technologies like unified communication, IP telephony, service-oriented architecture (SOA) and green IT practices.

In these competitive and challenging times, the success of small enterprises largely depends on their innovative practices and their potential to launch new products at competitive rates. It is in this regard that the adoption of new technologies and high-tech solutions becomes crucial for small businesses to constantly innovate and enhance their productivity.

There are multiple benefits of technology adoption, and it is necessary for an SME to have a clear understanding of the advantages offered by a particular technology and also undertake an integrated approach to make optimum use of it.

The use of new technologies and deployment of advanced IT applications can also enable SMEs to evolve a multi-pronged strategy to tap business opportunities and maximise their return on investments (ROI). Besides helping SMEs survive a lean phase, the usage of technology also helps SMEs to move up the value chain and improve their research and development (R&D) capabilities
