The economy has now changed and many people are suffering loss of jobs and decrease in income. If you find yourself in this position, most likely your credit status will suffer. Now is good time to take a look at your credit and start doing some credit score repair.
Start working with the three main credit reporting agencies. They contain all your financial activity and personal information. Many times this information is in error and has other people’s information in your reports. Here are some tips to get started.
1. First, contact all three credit agencies for you free yearly report. You should get these reports with 30 days.
2. When you get your reports, check your credit score, look for simple error in your personal data, and for information that is not yours. Make a list of all the errors you find.
3. Errors in the spelling of your name or address are simple errors that you want the credit agencies to change. Write a letter to the agencies, containing up to three errors, and ask them to change this information because it is in error.
4. Look for accounts that have been in your credit report for over seven years. If you find any, write to the reporting agencies and point out that these accounts are over seven years old and that you want to have them removed.
5. Look for accounts, on your report, that have late payment. Then call the lender to see if they will remove them. If not, then write the credit agency and tell them that there is an error in this account. They will notify the lender to see if this is true. The lender has 30 days to respond and if they don’t, the agency will remove this account from your credit report.
6. Each month do something to repair your credit and improve credit score. Work on only one account per month. If you letter doesn’t help to remove the account, write another letter 2-3 months later.
7. If you want to have help in getting your credit score repaired, look for a paralegal or lawyer that is experience in credit repair.
8. If you are having problems paying some of your bills with credit cards or bank loans, contact your lender and see what you can work out. Lenders are also suffering from the large number of defaults and many are willing to restructure loans to help from defaulting.
9. While writing letters to agencies, work on keeping your present finances and credit in tack. Pay your bills on time and avoid late charges, since they count against you. If you’re going to be late let your creditor know when you will pay.
Your ability to finance new purchases depends on your credit score. You need to protect this score by paying back your loans and doing it on time. Once you know you cannot meet these obligations, call your lender and work something out. Don’t put off calling because your credit score will suffer.
To start rebuilding your credit, apply for a prepaid credit card or a bank card that is backed by your saving account. When you use this card, buy the goods you normally buy and then pay off the card within a week. Keep the card balance low and this will help you build your credit back up.
