The search for things which could trigger migraine headaches is a continuing battle for those working hard to stay away from the often unbearable pain which follows the onset of a migraine attack. Possibly the most obvious of all migraine headache triggers is stress and sufferers from this neurological condition work hard at either avoiding stress altogether or mitigating the effects as far as they can. A few other triggers to stay away from are chocolate, nicotine, alcohol, and nuts.

There is however some folklore which holds that weather might trigger migraine headaches, so is this the case?

Arthritis and chronic back pains sufferers recognize that the pain of their condition is greatly affected by the weather and this lends some credence to the claims of chronic migraine sufferers that weather can also adversely influence their ability to steer clear of migraine headaches.

The announcement of a forthcoming pressure system may signal the arrival of a storm to many people but to the migraine sufferer it usually spells trouble. As the sheer weight of the air changes it affects the ease with which oxygen is breathed and moved around the body in the blood vessels. Capillaries may constrict more as a result of the altered pressure and this might be the trigger event of a migraine. It is worth noting that countering this effect using caffeine is usually one of the fastest and best remedies.

The wind is another aspect of the weather which often sets migraine sufferers on edge. Even if the pressure changes accompanying windy conditions are small the mere fact that pollutants which may be triggers for the migraine sufferer are swirling all around makes this another definite migraine trigger.

Sometimes a migraine headache might be secondary to a different kind of headache like a sinus headache. This may present with a temperature, difficulty breathing, and bodily aches and pains. When taken alongside the increasing pain of a migraine the result can be not only very painful but debilitating.

If allergens are the root cause of the sinus headache there could be a consequent infection which the body may try to fight off. During that period there is a fair chance that migraine headaches are triggered because the body is weakened and is susceptible to stress.

As can be seen, a change in the weather not only heralds the potential for one migraine trigger, but it actually acts as a jumping off point for a whole host of such trigger events which may lead to numerous migraine attacks. Unfortunately, weather triggers are unavoidable and even remaining indoors will have only a partial effect on the overall avoidance of a migraine trigger event.

As a substitute therefore, it is advisable to use various preventive measures to avoid trigger events. In some cases this will involve medication while at other times there are holistic means of migraine trigger avoidance. These include things like relaxation techniques, stress relief, cardiovascular exercise, massage therapy, aromatherapy, biofeedback and also acupuncture.
