The Best Kept Secret In Business and Life
When you throw a pebble into a pond, you see a splash and hear the plunk of the pebble hitting the water and sinking to the bottom. You also see concentric circles rippling out from the place where the pebble hit the water. Whether you realized it or not, you have caused change (splash, plunk, ripple) through a single and simple act.
Ripples in life and in business can be created by even very small pebbles (actions). For instance, taking the time to talk to someone in the supermarket line can have a big influence on them. Or a simple smile at someone in passing (instead of glancing away) may make a significant difference in their day.
When you take the time to make a connection, it inspires the other person to do the same for someone else.
Successful businesses are built on relationships---with clients, service providers, venders and peers. When you act honestly and with a sharing attitude in your business, it produces positive ripples---and we may not know when or how, but those actions return to us.
Tip #1: Be a SHARE-giver
In today's world, many small business owners are spending a great deal of time trying to identify the tools, techniques and strategies to help them get more business and generate a steady stream of revenue.
They are looking for what they can GET, acquire, add or purchase to make this happen. Very few think in terms of what they can GIVE.
One of the surest ways to feel good about yourself and about the world around you is to simply pay attention to others. In your business this could be as easy as:
· Sharing helpful information
· Offering a suggestion
· Remembering a birthday or holiday
· Passing on a referral
· Making a recommendation
· Including them in a brainstorming session
· Complimenting them
· Offering to help with a project
Share from your own experience. You have more to share than you realize. You may be the only one who can touch someone with your smile, words or actions. Remember, it's the small gestures that make a huge difference.
Tip #2: Accent-YOU-ate the Positive
In today's trying and frequently negative times, your sphere of influence (database) needs to know you are still around.
Send them a note or give them a call to let them know you are eager to assist them AND that you can do it within their budget. Remember the words 'I can do as much or as little as you want' and 'I can work within your budget'.
Practice the following:
1. Be Upbeat and Vital- people are attracted to those who are optimistic, energized and uplifting.
2. Be Visible- get out and meet people, attend luncheons and meetings, offer to give presentations.
3. Don't Stop Marketing!- have a system in place to market your business in some form or fashion EVERY day.
Ask yourself each day:
Who did I make smile today?
What did I do to make someone feel special today?
It's amazing how when we concentrate on making a difference in the lives of others, the ripple effect not only reaches others, but it comes back to us too!
