With over 1.4 billion people worldwide now having access to the Internet and most of them being in possession of a credit/debit card or Paypal account, online shopping has never been easier. No longer do you have to trail round crowded shops seeking that elusive product when a quick Google search later you have found your product and ordered it.

What's more - you're not just restricted to local retailers. You can now order a product from America or any other part of the world and have it delivered to your home in just a couple of days. Talk about convenience!

I remember getting my first PC in the early 90's and being amazed at what it could do. This was back in the good old MS DOS days, so it's fair to say things have evolved considerably since then. Now, internet shopping is fast becoming THE way to do even your grocery shopping and while many High Street retailers close their doors during the credit crunch, many online business are thriving.

Why is Internet Shopping so Popular?

Online shopping was initially seen as a convenient way to shop. It cut out queues and time wasted hunting for the product you were looking for. In the early days, shopping online was more expensive than buying in store, but it was considered a price worth paying in order to save some time which could be better spent on relaxation and leisure.

As technology advanced though, internet shopping not only became more convenient but it became less expensive. Amazon led the way in the development of a number of e-commerce focused sites, who took advantage over the relatively low cost base to offer significant savings on a huge range of items.

As the world of online shopping has become increasingly competitive through the years, retailers now offer a variety of discount codes in an attempt to increase sales and loyalty to their store.

In addition, you'll see deals such as "Buy it in our store and get it for £19.99. Buy it on our website and get it for £16.99." You can even get bulk discounts that you would not get in their store. This has led a lot of people to shop online. The merchants are literally pushing people to shop online by offering these special deals.

The Evolution of Internet Shopping

As well as traditional ecommerce sites, people are also able to find products through online auction sites, classified ads, forums and many other types of website to find the best deals. Increasingly, people are turning to the internet to do the majority of their shopping. You can shop online 24/7 no matter where you are, whether it's at home, work, school or now - thanks to the development of technology - you can even shop on the move with your mobile phone.

To even consider doing this back when I loaded up MS DOS on my first PC would have been crazy, but now we take it for granted. It's scary to think how far online shopping will have evolved in another 20 years, given it has only really taken off since the start of the new millennium.

A Note of Caution

While 99% of internet shopping sites are secure, there will be some places which are designed to rip you off. Stay safe while shopping online and stick to recommended online shops. You should also use your VISA or Mastercard where possible to protect you if the transaction goes wrong.
