After years of hard work, you're ready to put on that cap and gown and get your diploma. This is the time to celebrate and plan a great graduation party. One of the things you'll have to consider is graduation invitations. But before you go any further, here are seven things you should know about graduation invites that will help you make the right choice.

1. You're not the only one of your classmates planning a graduation party. Why is this important? Well, if you want your friends to show up at your party, you'll want to make sure you pick a date that isn't overcrowded with lots of other parties. Consider having your party the weekend before graduation or a couple of weeks after. Or, if everyone seems to be planning something for Friday or Saturday night, go with Sunday. Pick the right party date to announce on your invitations, and you'll have a good turn out for the celebration.

2. A graduation invitation that arrives by snail mail gets noticed. If you just call or email potential guests, the party might slip their minds after a few days. But an actual invitation they can hold in their hands is an attention grabber. It will remind them to save the date for your party.

3. You have extensive options when choosing graduation invitations. You don't have to be limited to formal, old-fashioned engraved invitations. To begin with, there's nothing wrong with making your own invitations. You could also download a free template from the internet, or use greeting card software to design one.

If you decide you want to order invitations, you can find one that fits your personality, highlights your interests or has a theme. Photo graduation invitations are a popular choice. Some online companies will combine your multiple photos to create one of a kind, personalized invitations that really stand out. Or you could even have small magnets printed with your party information. Your guests will stick them on their fridge for a continuous reminder of the upcoming party date.

4. You probably can't invite everyone to the graduation ceremony. That's why it's important to make it clear that the invitation is only for the party. Most schools have a limited space for the commencement, so they will restrict the number of people each student can invite to the event. If your invitation includes the name of your school and graduation date, place that information first, followed by something like, "you are invited to a party to celebrate, and then add the where and when.

5. Your guests may not know what to wear to your party. Give them a clue. Graduation parties can range from catered formal sit down dinners to very casual open houses. It's always a good idea to include on your invitations an indication of the dress code. Let them know if it's fancy or casual, so they know what to expect.

6. Adding RSVP to your invitation is still important. You don't need to enclose a formal reply card, but you should ask your guests to let you know if they're planning to attend. They can call you, email, send you a text message or tell you in person. Even if you're just planning a casual open house, you will want to have some idea of how many people will show up, so you can buy enough food. And if you are having your celebration catered or in a restaurant, you will need to have an exact count for the professionals who are coordinating your event.

7. You should mail your graduation invitations three to four weeks before the party. If it is going to be a casual open house, you might be able to get away with sending them two weeks before the celebration. But you don't want to wait too long or people might make other plans.

Whether you send handmade invitations you created or photo graduation invitations you ordered online, it will set the tone for your party. Mail out your invitations in plenty of time and grab your guests' attention. Give them the information they need and ask them to let you know if they can make it. And then get ready for a great graduation party. You earned it!
