As the pace of life increases and we all lead ever busier lives so we tend to forget about both our physical and mental health so that more and more of us are now suffering from varying degrees of stress. It is no surprise therefore that we find ourselves turning more and more to time honored practice of meditation.

Because of its proven history of effectiveness, today meditation is being carried out not only to calm the mind and reduce stress levels but also to cure an ever widening range of physical ailments.

There are numerous physical benefits to be derived from meditation which lowers the heart rate and therefore the strain on the heart, reduces levels of cortisol and other chemicals in the body which are linked to stress and reduces free radicals in the body so further helping to reduce blood pressure. It also improves the oxygen flow in the lungs to assist breathing and can even raise levels of DHEA to help slow down the aging process.

In terms of its psychological benefits, meditation reduces irritability and anxiety and increases memory and therefore the ability to learn. Consequently, it also creates a positive outlook on life giving you a feeling of youthfulness and rejuvenation.

Some other significant benefits to be derived from meditation exercises include:

* Producing a complete relaxation of not merely the mind and body but also of your soul.

* Helping with the healing of several illnesses for which there is a link between the physical illness and the emotional state of the sufferer.

* Affecting an opening into the 'inner self' thereby releasing our innate creativity.

* Producing an enhancement to our natural self-confidence leading to a stronger and more dominant will power.

* Generating an increase in energy which make it easier to tackle the stresses and strains of daily life.

* Creating a greater ability to deal with many vices and addictions ranging from tobacco and alcohol to narcotics.

And so the list goes on.

Like everything else in life however meditation can be a powerful force for good if it is used correctly but it can also be detrimental to your health if it is not used correctly. The secret therefore is to know exactly what guided meditation can do and to learn the art of meditation before adding daily meditation to your routine.
