More modest in terms of both geographical size and population density, Ankara is only Turkey’s second biggest city, following Istanbul. Around Cankaya two of the most loved restaurants are Azdenik Azdenik and Lazoli, where you might also like to sample some of the city’s best Raki – an anise flavoured spirit, often served as an aperitif. Orgunlar Street plays host to restaurant and bar Sudem where you can sample some Turkish classical music alongside the cuisine.

From archeological remains to a history of war, Ankara’s many museums will provide both enlightenment and inspiration in telling the story of Ankara’s spotted and colourful history, though if the weather’s fine it may be that a stroll in one of the many green spaces would be preferable. Kugulu park is best known for the swans which grace its grounds, given as a gift from the Chinese government and Altinpark is a frequent site for outdoor and indoor exhibitions of all kinds. Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo also provides a delightfully entertaining day out, particularly for those travelling with children.
