Did you know that on average, humans will walk over one hundred thousand miles in their lifetime which is the equivalent to walking around the globe four times? Each day the average person will take nearly eight thousand steps and when we run, the pressure exerted on our feet can exceed over three times that of our body weight.

There has been quite a lot of publicity around women, especially celebrities, regularly wearing high heels and the long term damage they can potentially cause. It seems to be true, as four times as many women as men suffer from foot problems. Mind you, on average, women do walk three miles more than men, each day! I guess we should be thankful that we didn’t live in 10th Century China though, where women often had their feet ‘bound’. This involved the toes being forced under the foot and tightly wrapped every day, thus forcing them like that permanently, to give the impression of dainty feet. Tiny tooties were apparently a sign of attractiveness to prospective husbands. Ouch!

Although feet are not often seen as the most attractive part of our anatomy, they need more TLC than they usually get so here’s some advice on how to keep your feet sweet!

To refresh feet, massage gently with a foot roller, or better still, ask you partner to massage your feet!
Sitting with your feet up for 10 minutes after a long day helps circulation.
To relax tired feet, soak them in warm water and add a bit of bath foam and perhaps a couple of drops of essential oils, sit back and enjoy!
For swollen feet, try warm water with salt (and then perhaps follow up with something that smells nice!). The salt helps to reduce swelling.
Foot scrubs and pumices can help to remove hard skin once you have softened your feet in the water and you should follow up with a good foot cream for silky soft toes!
Do not wear the same shoes everyday – especially not 6in heels ladies!
Practice foot yoga and stretching – good for the muscles, removing cramp and relaxing!

In the end, make sure you take really good care of your feet as you are using them a lot and will be using them for a long time. It is very easy to buy foot care products that will do most of the work and ensure that your feet feel great day after day.
