Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is brought about by plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that continuously forms on the teeth and gradually destroys the tissues that surround and support the teeth.

If you think that smoking and only have effect on the heart and lung, you better think again. Recent studies have proved that smoking and gum disease are connected. Although the connection of smoking and gum disease is very well known, experts had just recently done a national study to prove the connection between smoking and gum disease. Researchers say that although smoking is one of the risk factor of gum disease, it is the “one” factor that is influenced by the individual who have gum disease.

Gum disease otherwise known as periodontal disease is not a pleasurable experience. Although some specific forms of gum diseases are not painful and do not inhibit any signs or symptoms until the disease is on its advanced phase. It is important to avoid gum disease, because not only does the disease ruin the beautiful smile on your face, it also can bring complications like heart disease.

Symptoms of gum disease are many, but the most common one is bleeding of gums, which may happen along with sever pain. There is a dangerous type of periodontal disease that does not present pain, thus the patient may not really know that they have periodontal disease.

Brushing and flossing the teeth carefully and frequently prevents any plaque and tartar build up in the teeth. Tartar is one of the main causes of gum disease. The prevention of plaque build up is the same as prevention of gum disease. Flossing your teeth on a daily basis also is the best means of protection of gum disease because flossing is the only way to remove plaque in between the teeth that is out of reach by a toothbrush. Also, using toothpaste with fluoride give additional protection against tooth decay.

The best way to stop or treat gum disease is by beginning a regime of good hygiene habits if you have not been taking care of your teeth and gums prior to learning of the disease. This will entail brushing your teeth with a good fluoride toothpaste three times per day, flossing at least once per day, visiting your dentist twice per year, and staying away from foods that eat away the enamel of your teeth such as candy and soft drinks.

Effective tooth brushing techniques combined with a regular routine of flossing is a great start in keeping gum disease at bay. Plaque build up which is untreated will eventually lead to gum disease however, regular brushing and flossing can remove most of this plaque. Plaque build up between the teeth is hard to reach with a tooth brush. Dental floss can reach these areas and remove most of the plaque.
