The year that went past may remind many things for many people. But for technology buffs and gizmo freaks it was certainly the year of smartphones. Those who take pride in being the first few to lay hands on and use fancy new phones, had many a busy days in 2008 with a slew of smartphones that were launched amidst much fanfare.
It all started in the last week of June 2008 when Apple launched its much hyped and anticipated iPhone 3G. The long queues outside the stores selling the iPhone, reams of newsprint, the amount of airtime on television channels and the thousands of dedicated web pages and blog posts for the iPhone were ample proof to show the level of expectation for the gadget. And the gizmo largely lived up to the expectation. Economic slowdown or not, the iPhone ensured that it brought in enough moolah for Apple.
The iPhone 3G was followed by a slew of smartphones launched to cash in on the smartphone fever. The HTC came out with its first touch screen phone the HTC Touch Diamond, which was greeted with quite a warm response. For RIM, makers of the Blackberry smartphones, it was a double shot as they launched two new models, the Blackberry Bold and the first touch screen Blackberry Storm.
It’s not just the hardware but also the software that maketh a phone. That was the message from Google as it launched its first open source mobile software Android through the HTC G1 phone. Now many other cell phone makers and carriers have shown interest in using the Android software.
It’s not just sufficient to have the best cell phones and smartphones. An efficient service provider and good cell phone rate plans that suits our need are also essentials to ensure that the phones serve the intended purpose. Cell service comparison is essential to ensure that it’s not just the phone but also the user who is smart.
