An accident happens in the blink of an eye. Someone has fallen off a ladder, cut themselves badly or is having an allergic reaction. So what is the recourse? In the past there was only one option and that was to rush the injured person to a local hospital emergency room.
The Emergency Room Visit
Once they arrived there, any number of situations could be encountered. If the emergency room was crowded you could be left waiting for hours in a crowded room full of people some sick with who knows what. Is the person wheezing and coughing next to you infected with that new incurable strain of highly contagious drug resistant tuberculosis?
Cost Considerations
Also, what about cost? Face the facts, that basic rules for untold generations was that in a medical emergency there really was no price tag. You simply threw yourself at the mercy of the medical establishment and dealt with the financial consequences when the bill arrived.
Emergency Room Visit Charge
Of course this meant that your bill would also include a basic charge for merely walking trough the emergency room door and registering at the desk. It's usually a few hundred extra dollars that is tacked onto your bill but what are your options?
Local Urgent Care Centers
The fact, is that there are now more options then ever and they come in the form of local emergency care centers. They are basically small local clinics that are equipped to handle non life threatening emergencies and they are helping to bring costs down.
Easier on the Wallet
For one thing, there is no charge for the actual emergency room visit, only for the services rendered. Also, they tend to be more like visiting, say, a dentists office, where you can ask about your charges as the service is being rendered. This new line item form of medical care completely eliminates any unwanted surprises on your final bill.
