Knowing our ancestors can be a fun activity to do especially when you are enthusiastic in tracing our roots. We hear stories from parents and grandparents and even from old folks in our area and some of the events can be very interesting. Some of the actions that our ancestors have done a long ago are connected at this present time. Some sacrifices and battles are done by them; that is the reason why we are here today enjoying liberty. There are many heroic stories that our old folks have told us, and we want to emulate the principles that we learned from those stories and we want to know more. This is possible by doing what genealogists do, building our own family tree.

Making a family history is just easy to do especially when you feel the spirit of doing it. Giving honor to our ancestors and learning from what they have done can be the best thing to know more of ourselves.

To start, we have to gather information from the stories that our parents and grandparents has told us. We can take note most importantly of the names, important dates such as marriage, birth, christening, and death, and other information that we can get. Aside from interviewing them, we can also try to browse old diaries and old memorabilia. Some even visit graveyards to get more information. When you have gathered as much information then you have to record it in a family tree or a pedigree chart.

Filling out the pedigree chart up to the oldest possible generation can be fun. With the initial information in your hand, you can visit government offices and request for the free public records that pertains to the name of the parents of the person that you have last researched. Having the free public records of the parents will give you the grandparents of the original person. This will go on and on until you link your ancestors to the deepest roots. Sometimes it can also be a challenge when there are some problems with the free public records such as burnt, damaged, or even lost. But the sure thing is that free public records can greatly help in genealogy.

Nowadays, public records are available on the Internet through genealogy sites and premium public records site. These sites are very assistive especially in the practice of family history research efforts.
