At a point when cell phone service providers are behaving like imperialistic forces with their authoritarian ways, rigid rules and hefty termination fees, Verizon has made an announcement that comes as a whiff of fresh air. All of Verizon’s new customers will now be free from their annual contracts. Their plans will be valid only on a month-to-month basis. For those who wish to have one-year and two-year contracts with cell phone service providers, the plans will still exist. So, no more contracts, no termination fees and freedom to choose any Verizon phone or plan.
Of course there is a catch here. The month-to-month plans are unsubsidized, which makes them more expensive than phones with contract. Also the existing customers with valid contracts must play out their existing contracts to switch to the new plan. On comparison of the cell phone plan with other service providers, one finds that T-Mobile has a similar plan called ‘Flexplay’. AT&T’s similar plan is called ‘GoPhone Pick Your Plan’. Sprint does not seem to have a comparable plan. You can try to compare cell phone plans and choose the best one and get liberated from annual contracts.
