Dry hair is typically the symptom of either environmental exposure or lack of adequate sebum (hair oil) production. Sebum is secreted from sebaceous glands associated with follicle pores. Overactive or underactive production can cause oily or dry scalp, respectively. Warm, humid weather often excites sebaceous glands and increases hair oil. Colder temperatures and low humidity slow sebum production; combined with increased wind and decreased humidity in offices or homes, hair can become excessively dry.
Hair Treatments for Dry Hair
Take a few drops of safflower oil in your palms and carefully take your hair (while dry).
Leave this in your hair for atleast 2 hours before washing.
Eating "right" can do wonders for your hair. Emu Oil - Used for thousands of years by the Australians, Emu Oil is a deep penetrating, natural moisturizer. It is found commonly in the best shampoos and conditioners, but it can be used alone or with Vitamin E additives as a hair treatment. It is an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and is often used to treat scalp psoriasis, eczema, irritation and inflammation.
An egg mixed with skimmed milk is whipped till foam is formed and then applied on the hair.
A blend of castor oil, glycerin, vinegar and a herbal shampoo can be applied.
A teaspoon of lavender oil mixed with coconut oil is heated at a low temperature and then applied.
Proper hair grooming is essential in treating dry hair. Get a good hair cut to get rid of split ends. Use shampoo and conditioner regularly. Daily is more than sufficient; twice or three times a week is fine. You can use olive oil to give fry hair a deep conditioning treatment. Just massage olive oil onto hair and scalp and cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes. Dry hair is an indication of poor nutrition and mild dehydration so make sure to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. You can also consider taking vitamin and mineral supplements.
Use a shampoo that contains humectants (like panthenol or glycerin) which will encourage water to bind to your hair to reduce dryness.
Use acidifiers – they lock in moisture at the cuticle (at the “root” of the problem, so to speak).
Dry hair, scalp and dandruff are the end results of certain elements that rid the natural oils your body is producing so that the oils can reach your hair and skin.
