Telephone interviews are an increasingly popular method of pre-screening job applicants to gather information about their suitability for the role before a conventional face-to-face interview. They are generally brief, and very often cover things like your experience, availability and salary requirements. The interview is likely to highlight essential criteria from the job specification, and the impression you create in the opening moments of the interview will generally determine whether or not you will be successful.
Your preparation for the telephone interview should be the same as any other form of interview. Your aim is to get to the next level which is to obtain a conventional face-to-face interview. Therefore, it's crucial that you put in a strong performance to persuade the interviewer that you are indeed worth interviewing face-to-face.
Due to the lack of face-to-face interaction, some unique considerations must be taken when interviewing for jobs over the telephone. Here are some helpful tips to help you be at your best and ensure that your next telephone interview is successful.
1. Ensure you are fully prepared for the interview by going through the steps in the Interview Preparation section.
2. Memorize every aspect of your CV, so you can quickly answer questions about it.
3. Have your CV as well as your employer research materials in front of you to refer to if necessary.
4. Have a short list of your accomplishments available to review.
5. Be prepared to give a positive two minute summary of your professional career.
6. Select an appropriate time and find a comfortable and relaxed setting with no risk of distractions to take the call.
7. Do not smoke, chew gum or drink tea during the interview.
8. Stand up to project more confidence into your voice when talking.
9. Listen carefully and keep your answers brief and relevant to the question.

21. Before you hang up the phone, reiterate your interest in the role and thank the interviewer for calling.
