Cirrhosis of the Liver is the chronic inflammation of the liver, which results in scar tissue replacing the normal liver tissue. The scar tissue of the liver blocks the flow of blood through the organ and disrupts the normal functions of the liver.

A degenerative inflammatory disease that results in the hardening and scarring of liver cells. The liver becomes unable to function properly due to the scarred tissue which prevents the normal passage of blood through the liver. Most common cause is excessive alcohol consumption. Malnutrition and chronic inflammation can also lead to liver malfunction. Those in the later stages may develop anemia, bruising due to bleeding under the skin, and edema.

Cirrhosis of liver refers to all forms of liver disease. It is one of the serious hepatic diseases. In this disease the liver contracts in size and becomes hard and leathery. This contraction in size is due to the loss of cells that exceeds cell replacement. The continuous damage of liver affects its structure and functions that lead to hepatic failure and ultimately death. It is the 12th leading cause of death that’s kills around 26,000 people every year.

Cirrhosis is the irreversible scarring, due to excessive consumption of alcohol or a viral infection like hepatitis C, of the liver. This usually happens during the end stages of severe liver disorders. The normal tissue of the liver is destroyed when cirrhosis occurs, and fibrous scarred tissue replaces it.

There are no initial symptoms and the person may not be aware of the cirrhosis, however when the symptoms do show up there will be extreme tiredness, itchy skin, nausea, loss of weight and appetite and jaundice. Cirrhosis brings on a complete liver failure, cancer of the liver, severe malnutrition and high blood pressure which occurs in the veins of the gullet and makes them very delicate and even bleeds because of this.

In time, jaundice a yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes and intense itching can develop. But other factors including damaged bile ducts, immune system problems and prolonged exposure to certain environmental toxins can cause liver scarring, too. Specific treatment for cirrhosis depends on the underlying cause, but anyone with cirrhosis must avoid alcohol and other substances that harm the liver. When damage is so severe that liver function is seriously impaired, a liver transplant may be the only option.

As the largest organ in your body, your liver plays a greatly multi functional role. And, as such, persons dealing with cirrhosis often experience difficulty digesting fat in their diet as well. A good guideline to use for your fat intake would be to try and keep the total calories of fat in your diet to around 25%. And, as a general principle for a healthy diet, and for it’s liver protecting qualities, try to ingest a good portion of that fat from Omega-3 fatty acids, found in food such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseed oil.
