This set of directions to migrate SharePoint from 2003 to 2007 may seem very easy. However, in reality, a lot of planning and decision-making is involved before following any guide to upgrade to SharePoint 2007 and its content migration.
There are two methods available to upgrade SharePoint to 2007 and SharePoint migration, which are the gradual in place migration and the database migration. The gradual migration is the most popular technique of upgrading SharePoint and content migration. For gradual migration, an individual requires a new and planned URL setup.
This guide will help an individual to switch easily from SharePoint Portal server 2003 with Service Pack 2 to Microsoft Office SharePoint server 2007 thus enhancing the SharePoint migration tool.
The environment used to create this guide is as follows:
1. Windows server 2003 with Standard i386 running Active Directory
2. DNS SharePoint Portal server 2003 with SP2
3. SQL server 2004 with SP4
Latest information on upgrading SharePoint 2007 is also available on the Internet.
Microsoft has come up with Microsoft Office SharePoint server 2007 to help people with instruction on upgrading from the SharePoint 2001 and 2003 server to the 2007 server. This server instructs an individual to download Microsoft Net framework version 2.0 redistributable package (x86).
After downloading the Microsoft .Net framework, install it by running dotnetfx.exe file. Click ‘Next’ on the welcome screen to start with the installation process. At the EULA screen, which shows the terms and conditions of installing the program click ‘I accept and Install’. The install will now run for several minutes and will display a message when it finishes. Through the same technique, download the .Net framework version 3.0 which is a Redistributable Package (x86).
Now, an individual is required to download a trial version of Microsoft Office SharePoint server 2007. The trial version can be converted to a full installation anytime within the 180-day limit. This can be done by submitting the full license code. After downloading the full version, the screen will request rebooting of the system. Individuals need to click ‘yes’ to successfully complete the process of upgrading SharePoint 2003 to 2007.
