Old Boise is located at the east end of Boise's downtown commercial district. It is the heart of Boise, filled with the state's rich heritage and energetic lifestyle. You will find that in Old Boise, much of its history still remains, merging perfectly with the modern ways of the city.

We can find a lot of historical buildings in Old Boise, like the homes of former government officials. Other more prominent historic buildings include the Perrault Building (1879), the Masonic Temple (1892), the Spiegel Building (1892), the Belgravia Apartments (1904), and the Boise City Turnverein Building (1906).

Other kinds of buildings can also be seen. From home to fraternal halls to commercial buildings, Old Boise has them. Most are structured as two-story brick buildings with stone trim. Many go with the distinctive historical aura of the district. Old Boise once used early gas street lamps but replaced them with single-electric globe cast-iron lights. A few of these still remains today and further adds to the Old Boise's distinctive atmosphere.

Old Boise began more aggressive developments in the 1900s, starting with the development of the Statesman and Pioneer Tent &Awning Buildings. The Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall, built in 1917, was the last major historical building made.

Old Boise grew more commercial and industrial as the years went by. A lot of improvements were made and the district became the center of Boise's general lifestyle.

Within Old Boise is the Basque community which has provided a cultural heritage to the area. The community fostered the growth of rooming houses, churches, and meeting places. Even in the present time, the Basque culture is still prevalent, as is implied by the presence of the Basque Center.

In the 1950's Old Boise began to look neglected. A lot of the buildings put up were pathetically made without the architectural character of the older buildings that Old Boise became famous for. Bars, pawn shops, and other “different” buildings intruded into the area and further tipped Old Boise into disorganized place.

There were those who decided to bring back the old and original character of Old Boise, though. Many buildings were restored and renovated to include that unique historical feeling of Old Boise. This campaign is still being carried out today, with plans for renovations to strengthen that Old Boise historic being.

Presently, Old Boise emits the feeling of being in between the old world and the new one. Despite the nostalgic atmosphere of old times, the district manages to offer what the modern world needs. Today, a lot of restaurants and shopping centers bring out the best that the district has to offer. So does the different business in the area.

Old Boise is also known to be the center of Boise's nightlife. Bars and clubs are alive at night, marking Boise as not at all out of date even if it retains the historic feeling.

Boise may be pretty much just like any other state, but it has always managed to be one of the most livable and most family-friendly states in America. The city is not only for those who wants the feeling of history, but also for the young ones who can learn how the old and the new can become one.
