Kidepo national park is different from other national parks in Uganda. This park is situated in north eastern Uganda at the border with Kenya. No matter what, very few Ugandans and the whole world in general know little about this park. Although much of Uganda’s land gets rainfall throughout the year, this part of Uganda gets less rainfall compared to other parts of Uganda and for that reason, the wildlife that is found in this –park is not found in any other park in Uganda.
Isolated from the Ugandan mainstream by the harsh plains north of Mount Elgon, This National Park is one of Africa's last great wilderness areas, a tract of rugged savannah dominated by the 2,750m mount Morungole and transected by the Kidepo and Narus Rivers.
While all notional parks xin Uganda have almost the same type xof wildlife, you will never find a gazelle, one of the antelope families in any park apart from Kidepo national park. and of you ask any person who know this park, will fall suite with me.
Because of its position, many people are turning their face to this park although it is far from all city bright lights, thanks to an executive safari lodge in this park.
Because of the instabilities in this region, tourism had reduced to minimum and much wildlife was hunted almost to extinction. But with the coming of the Museveni,s government, all is back to normal and Apoka Safari Lodge is working to full capacity.
It is on record that there is no place in Uganda that is so much quieter than Kidepo national park. Many people in their honeymoons are no taking it to this place just to relax and enjoy nature to its fullest. The management of Apoka Safari lodge and the Uganda wildlife authority rangers are so friendly and as all the natives of this place.
By the away this place is occupied by the Karimojong people who are nomadic cattle keepers. The have a very interesting culture which is found nowhere in Uganda and Africa in general. For example if you want to know more about women genital mutilation (women circumcision) in Uganda, this is the best place to make your research from.
The local community has a group of cultural entertainers who on request are always available to perform. The performers have a large menu for you, traditional dances such as the Emuya of the Naporre and Nyangia, ethnic groups and Larakaraka and Apiti dances of the Acholi are waiting for you. The money that this group earns is used for uplifting their welfare.
If you are interested in increasing your knowledge on African culture, visits to the Karimajong manyattas (homesteads) and probably kraals to see traditional costume, stools, spears headdress, knives, bows and arrows and jewelry can be arranged.
Some of the above mentioned items can be purchased from the park tourist office. It's advisable that you make arrangements for the Kidepo activities nature walk two days in advance. This booking can be done from the park headquarters in Apoka or from Uganda Wildlife Authority Headquarters in Kampala.
Having stayed at this place for almost a week, I can’t fail to recommend it for your next Holiday.
