When things were starting to get better for Brady Quinn, tragedy overcame, as Quinn will be out for more than 5 games the rest of the season due to an injury on his right index finger.
He warmed the bench for more than 550 days and due to Derek Anderson’s bad performance this season, Quinn was given the responsibility and chance to make what first year rookies dream about… lead the field.
Quinn has been the starting QB the past three weeks, counting the November 17th victory against the Buffalo Bills 29-27, match in which Quinn shined with attitude. His level of concentration on the field was telling everyone that he was the man for the job. At some point during the game we saw that Quinn strike his right hand against the helmet of a Bill’s defender. Despite the fact that he was on pain, he finished the game with great effort. Unfortunately it was a small but serious injury: the tip of his finger was broken.
The NFL is plague with injuries and the grievances’ lists before game times are always a big deal. Sorry to say it, but the only player who is not allowed to get hurt is the QB.
Quinn’s case is a little complicated due to the fact that the QB must practice on a daily basis; this left Brady with no healing time and few options to recover. Even though he received therapy immediately, after Sunday’s game against Houston (Browns lost 16-6 and Quinn was benched on the 3rd) the QB’s finger was examined by doctors and they find out that it was not healing.
Now, I can hardly imagine the level of frustration Quinn is undergoing, not only because he will be out for the rest of the season, but he was finally catching up on the field and his level of confidence was looking better.
Things will get polemic for the team and fans the following weeks. So, Quinn had 3 options in regards his grievance for the rest of the season; he could continue playing under the risk of hurting even worst, immobilize his finger for good and let it heal naturally or have surgery immediately.
Quinn’s injury comes at a terrible moment for the Cleveland Browns, as the team has had poor rhythm during the season. The reality here is that Derek Anderson will have to be back from bench the rest of the campaign, although his future does not seemed too bright with the team. Coach Crennel made it clear when he pulled Anderson three weeks ago that Quinn will be the starting quarterback next season and even if by miracle Anderson over performs for the time being, I don’t see him with the Browns next year.
Derek Anderson was eaten alive by the media and fans as soon as the season opened; his poor game performances and bad attitude left many wondering that perhaps he was not the leader they all thought he was.
With only 3 games as a starter, Quinn achieved enough (45-of-89 for 518 yards) this past weeks before the injury, to be consider the next ideal starting QB for the team on the 2009-2010 period. We hope to see him on the line up, he deserves it.
