Dallas -10 vs. San Francisco
There was a few times in NFL history when the words "San Francisco at Dallas" excited every football fan. The teams met numerous times for the right to go to the Super Bowl in the 1980's and 90's and because they were usually first place teams within their division, they seemingly met every year in the regular season. These battles were usually the marquee matchups on the NFL's schedule.
These days, San Francisco is one of the worst NFL franchises and has been so for some time and Dallas is struggling to regain control of their season and would like to capitalize on a much needed victory last week. Furthermore the franchises have not met since 2005.
The Cowboys (6-4) can easily get back on track with a couple victories this week when they face the 49ers (3-7) on Sunday afternoon and then face San Francisco's division-mate, and equally hapless, Seattle Seahawks on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving game. The chances of being 8-4 and having 10 days to rest, and for Tony Romo to heal, before their showdown at Pittsburgh, would be a huge lift for a team that was all but left for dead a few weeks ago. In addition, the Cowboys will be at home for four of their next five games.
Dallas may have saved their season when they beat Washington 14-10 on the road. The win was important because it prevented a sweep by the Redskins and allowed the Cowboys to remain in contention for the Wildcard and even a tiny glimmer of hope, albeit unlikely, for the divisional title. Romo seemed a little rusty in his first game back last week, however his team rallied around him. Romo threw for 198 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions-both coming in the first half. Dallas' defense which has struggled mightily at times this season held Washington to 228 total yards.
The 49ers are the second place team in the NFC West, but at 3-7 that is a pretty pathetic reality. San Francisco's three victories are against teams (Detroit, Seattle, St. Louis) who are a combined 4-26. If the second place 49ers lose Sunday and the Cardinals win, Arizona will clinch the division title with five weeks left in the regular season.
The 49ers come in riding a victory over their division rival Rams 35-16. The victory snapped San Francisco's six game losing streak and gave Interim Coach Mike Singletary his first career victory as a head coach.
Dallas won the last game between the rivals, 34-31 in 2005.
