Bulldogs -3 vs. Spartans
Yes it is that sad time of year when we start to bid adieu to many college football teams. Many conferences such as the Big Ten wrap up their regular season schedules this week, while others, like the PAC 10, still have a couple of weeks remaining. For one team, San Jose State, their season will end before the typical Saturday afternoon as they welcome in Fresno State Friday night.
The Bulldogs actually have one more game left against Boise State next week, but unless they receive a bowl bid, the Spartans' season is done. A win over 6-4 Boise State would go a long way into possibly securing a bowl game for San Jose State (6-5), but a 6-6 finish, although technically bowl eligible, would be a tough sell. Last week put a damper on bowl hopes when the Spartans lost a humbling contest at Nevada 41-17. In the loss, San Jose State's second straight and third out of four games, Kyle Reed threw 15 of 27 for 215 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Things appear a little brighter for Fresno State at 6-4. Even if the Bulldogs go 6-6 an argument could be made for a 6-6 Fresno State team being a better draw at a bowl game than a 6-6 San Jose State team, due to the national following the Bulldogs receive. However, winning the last two games, starting with the Spartans would not allow that argument to be heard at all.
Fresno State will take their high octane rushing attack up against a San Jose State team that has been struggling defensively. The Spartans are giving up nearly 30 points per contest in their 1-3 stretch. They even surrendered 24 points to Idaho in their only win 30-24 during the period. The Bulldogs come in averaging 186 yards per contest led by Lonyae Miller and Ryan Matthews.
The Bulldogs easily beat the Spartans 30-0 in their last meeting last October. San Jose State won the year before 24-14 at Spartan Stadium, which was their only win in the last 10 games against Fresno State.
