The famous Spanish Cup or Kings Cup had a historical reverse, as Real Irun a 3rd division team pushed the famous Real Madrid out of the competition in the third round of the tournament.
Before getting in details regarding this historical elimination, I will portray some aspects of these two teams. The Real Unión Club de Irún is one of those Spanish teams people like to watch when there is nothing else on TV and the clubs history does not favor or complement the team to much. With 40 seasons on 3rdDivision, 16 on Division B and 9 campaigns in the regular 2nd Division, the “white-blacks” never aimed for a real ambition, until recently.
In the Spanish Cup challenge against Real Madrid On November 11, of the present year, Real Unión was defeated 3-4 at Real Madrid’s home ground the Santiago Bernabéu, but still appear triumphant 6-6 on cumulative score, following a 3-2 home victory in the first round. Irun had a great advantage on the count double rule, which means they were the team to score more goals away from home.
In the history of Real Madrid, a team who has won the Cup 17 times (last in 1993), it was the first time ever that the team was eliminated by a third-level club at home.
During the game, the vasco team dominated as if they had played at this level for many years and within minutes of the 1st half, Irun’s player Abasolo set the net on fire with the first goal; the Madrid’s fanatics at that moment were still in the impression of a “lucky” opportunity from the visitors. Just like in the game played a few weeks back, Real Madrid kept it simple; making many believe it was a serious match for them. The only player from “The Whites” who was filling the indignity on the situation was Captain Raúl and at minute 34 tied the game for a brief moment.
Everybody wondered what Irun’s coach Iñaki Alonso told his players during the half time break, as the squad came out more aggressive and focused than ever and within four minutes of the second part striker Asier Salcedo was giving the lead one more time. Captain Raúl was aiming high and a minute later put the 2-2 for the relief of the infuriated fans. The 20 year old Alberto Bueno from the Madrids youth system was given his official debut and he took great advantage of it; at minute 68 he was putting a big smile on Coach Bernd Schuster with a good goal on the rivals. Captain Raúl knew that with a goal difference the team was set for the Kings Cup and at 86`, he was leaving no doubt why he is the man to carry the big shoes on the team; the 4-2 score was looking definitive.
Irún’s player Eneko Romo left no doubt on the line “it’s not over until minute 90” and within seconds of wrapping up, he was claiming the final difference on goals, which classified a team who came with a humble spirit, but left with a well deserved privileged conquest.
