NSAIDs as its name suggests, are anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs often found in small doses in common pain relieving drugs such as aspirin. Scientists used a combination of two of the NSAIDs, which are Piroxicam and cisplatin (CDDP), and found the results produced anti-tumor activity within malignant mesothelioma cancer cells.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer where malignant cells are found in the mesothelium. Mesothelium is a protective sac which covers most of the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma does not have any known full cure, but research is going on to find best treatments for this disease. Combination of different treatments has shown great improvement in most of the cases.
The research of NSAIDs by scientists is considered by some to be breakthrough research for victims of mesothelioma cancer. The results will be continued to be studied but the initial results highlighted a significant and positive trend toward cancer cell repression and prevention, particularly for malignant mesothelioma. This study also helped scientists in finding the potential for determining a specific molecular target of mesothelioma cells, because of these drugs' anti-tumor effects, could lead to advances in therapy treatments of the deadly cancer.
