Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain cosmetic dentists affix to the surface of patients’ teeth. With porcelain veneers, patients can improve the appearance of a wide variety of dental flaws, such as discoloration and teeth that are crooked, chipped, cracked, or broken.

Modern porcelain veneers are a dramatic improvement over traditional resin veneers. The translucent quality of the porcelain closely matches the appearance of natural tooth enamel, so patients can enjoy smile restorations that are virtually undetectable and look naturally brilliant.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

The porcelain veneers procedure can be completed in only two trips to the cosmetic dentist’s office. During the first visit, the dentist will numb the area to be treated and gently shave down the surface of the teeth to accommodate veneers. He or she will then take an impression of the patient’s mouth, which will be sent to a special dental laboratory for fabrication of customized veneers. Temporary caps will be placed over prepped teeth to ensure comfort and aesthetics while veneers are being created.

Some cosmetic dentists now feature on-site dental veneer fabrication with systems like CEREC. Where this modern technology is available, patients can complete the whole porcelain veneers process in one longer office visit.

During the second visit, the dentist will remove temporary caps and affix veneers to the fronts of teeth using special resin composite cement. He or she will then make minor adjustments to the placing, shape, and/or color of the veneers to ensure the patient enjoys the most natural-looking and beautiful smile possible.

Porcelain Veneer Recovery and Maintenance

After porcelain veneer placement, patients may experience some minor and temporary sensitivity but generally no recovery period is necessary. While porcelain veneers may not last a lifetime, with proper care and maintenance patients with veneers can enjoy brilliant smiles for decades.
