Bariatric surgery is recommended only as a last resort for those with a BMI of over 40. The LAP BAND Surgery falls under the category of restrictive bariatric surgery. This means that it restricts the ingestion of food to about an ounce. This is achieved by reducing the capacity of the stomach to hold food, by using a flexible adjustable silicone band to tightly constrict the upper part of the stomach thereby forming a pouch like structure which acts as a storage bag for food. This gives a sensation of fullness and reduces food intake. The food very slowly passes from the pouch to the remaining part of the stomach. Therefore the person does not feel hungry between meals. This is a minimal invasive surgery done by laparoscopic methods.

The person has to go in for various check ups before surgery. He or she is also recommended to take psychological help to prepare him or her for surgery, the consequences and a changed lifestyle. The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia and there is less pain as compared to other types of bariatric surgery.

After surgery, the person has to remain in hospital for two to three days. He or she can resume work after three weeks since this surgery is less complex than other types of bariatric surgery. The patient’s health and progress is monitored over the coming weeks and if necessary the silicone band is either loosened or tightened by either drawing or injecting saline into the band mechanism.

On average, a patient requires two to three adjustments of the band in the first year. An expert dietitian’s help is required in order to advice the right type of diet and exercise; and to facilitate a smooth transition from liquid and pureed food to solid food, which can be eaten in about six weeks. Gastro esophageal reflux or vomiting may occur in the beginning as the patient will find it difficult to adjust to the limited capacity. Overeating can cause severe discomfort and therefore a person must stick to his diet specifications. There have been cases where the band cut into the stomach layer causing bleeding. This requires surgical revision and has occurred in hardly 1 percent of the patients. The band can be further loosened in case of pregnant women to meet the extra requirement of food. The best part about LAP BAND® surgery is that it is completely controllable and reversible.

Every person responds differently to LAP BAND surgery. Therefore regular monitoring is the key.

About the author:
With so many forms of weight loss surgery available, deciding on your best option can be confusing. Because there are risks associated with bariatric surgery, you should discuss the differences between Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery and gastric banding surgery options including LAP-BAND surgery.
