How much yoga experience needed to participate in a yoga certification program?
Does this sound familiar? - “I’ve been practicing yoga for (just a few/or many) months or years. Do I have enough experience for a training?” In fact, how much training or experience someone needs before a ‘teacher training’ is a topic of much debate among teacher trainers? It is true that at one level, the more experience someone has, the better prepared they are. And for some people training leads to ‘knowledge’ which blocks learning. And – more to the point – Yoga is a state of being that, as the yoga masters say, it is available to everyone.

In some cases, at the end of a month-long intensive, some trainees will still need more practice and experience before they are ready to teach. Yet it is amazing to see the progress and learning that’s possible in a short time when people are open-minded, eager, focused and present. Training is a success to the degree that it inspires, as well as educates and transforms the trainees.

How to choose a yoga teacher training:
Yoga training involves an investment of money and time. What you explore, learn and practice in a training can affect every aspect of your life from then onward. Whatever training you choose will be a learning experience. Any program that teaches about yoga and facilitates you practicing yoga enhances your life. There are many different programs available, each varying considerably. The better the program you choose, the more it is suited for you, the better it will enable you to learn.

Things to consider:
There are some points you need to decide upon, while choosing a yoga teacher training program-
• Which trainings best prepare you to teach and which also set an atmosphere for you to grow and transform both personally and professionally (teachers teach largely by their presence rather than their techniques)?
• Which programs have the best quality and diversity of faculty?
• Which have the best setting and facilities to create the ideal yogic and learning environment?
• Which prepare you in a holistic way?
• Does the program include nutritious foods and other means for supporting vibrant, cleaner living?
• What do former graduates have to say? What is the quality of those who graduate the program?

There are different benefits and restrictions to different approaches and it’ll depend on what fits your lifestyle. The study of yoga is for life. Yoga is to be ‘taught’ by presence, by who we are, and there’s always more to learn and experience.
