Any one with a basic sense of aesthetics can attempt to do good interior decoration with some guidance, but a professional interior designer is a trained person with special skills. Today in the US universities provide professional 3-year degree courses aimed to train students to be qualified interior designers. Subjects taught include, design of furniture, computer-aided design (CAD), drawing, perspective, spatial planning, colors, fabrics, architecture, ergonomics, ethics, and more.

Basically the interior designers work is to improve the purpose, safety, and the ambience of interior spaces in buildings. The work of a professional interior decorator is to satisfy the building occupants’ tastes and plan out all colors, textures, lighting, furniture and plan and execute space work within the interiors of buildings. Business houses and offices have over the years learned that having a good interior is essential to impress their clients, increase sales, productivity and work efficiently as the environment has a great influence on people. Thus today services of interior designers are required in all sectors including, private residences, offices, restaurants, hotels, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, colleges etc.

Today’s interior designer even involves himself with architectural detailing. Yes, many aspects of the interiors are decided even as the building’s architecture is being designed. Thus the location of fittings and fixtures may be recommended by the interior designer. The designer initially meets the clients and gets to know his requirements and comes up with a good design plan. On approval of his design he specifies the materials, furnishings, finishes, wall colors, furniture, lighting, flooring, etc. For bigger new-build projects he will be required to submit drawings for approval by the architect.

Many specialty areas have developed for the interior decorators and we find many professionals who focus on different interior areas like lighting, kitchen, bath, and closet designs interior gardens etc. For example certification in ‘Kitchen and bath design’ is made available from the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Freelance interior designers are also quite common these days. Interior decorators may have to work under stress to meet deadlines. Another pressure they may face is to stay within a fixed budget and at the same time please clients. The self-employed interior designers often earn a per-hour consulting fee and also gets a percentage of the total cost of interior design work involving furniture, lighting, artwork etc.

In the early days designers had to do a lot of drawing and paper based work, but modern technology and computers have helped interior designers to use specialist interior design software to do the design work more efficiently and effectively, helping them to actually visualize a particular interior even before it gets its real form.

The American Society of Interior Designers is a professional association for interior designers in the United States. Following graduation in an interior design degree, after two years of work experience, Interior designers can qualify for membership to the association.
