During the Christmas season, you may not be thinking about your parent's 50th anniversary next April or that big birthday party you're planning next summer. But the holidays are the perfect time to find an assortment of great party supplies you can use at occasions all year round. That is, if you know what to look for. Here's the top seven:

1. Christmas lights. They're not just for putting on your Christmas tree. A box of little white lights you can find everywhere during the holidays will make any party shine. White lights in a centerpiece, around a table or an archway, even in the potted plants, can make any occasion festive (twinkling optional). Pick up strands of solid color lights, too. Red is great for Valentine's Day, green for St. Patrick's Day, etc. You can also find novelty strings of Christmas lights that feature everything from cartoon characters (great for a kid's birthday) to chili pepper lights for your next fiesta themed party.

2. Silver and Gold. If you're even contemplating the possibility of planning a 25th or 50th anniversary party, this is the best time of year to find everything silver and gold. Candles, plates, baskets, ribbons, big bows and everything else imaginable is shiny, metallic and begging to be scooped up by the savvy shopper. But you don't have to be shopping for just a golden wedding anniversary. For a touch of elegance to any party, silver or gold can't be beat.

3. Stars. You can't go to a place that sells Christmas decorations without finding lots of stars in every shape, size and product. Star shaped ornaments look great hanging everywhere at a graduation celebration of someone who's "reaching for the stars". Or maybe there's a birthday party on the agenda for someone else in your life who's a star. The holidays are the right time to pick up these versatile items

4. Snowflakes and fake spray "snow". If you're planning any winter party or winter wonderland themed event, Christmas is the time to buy these. You can find an abundance of decorations from icicles to snowmen. By January, all these items are gone from the stores, so they won't be easy to find.

5. Solid color anything. Of course, there's tons of red and green items. But there's also a lot of blue (for Hanukkah). So, if your upcoming party can take advantage of those colors, this is the time to find a large supply.

6. Foil wrapping paper. This is available in just about every color and sometimes with patterns that don't look too much like Christmas (like stripes, swirls or stars). But you can use this to cover tables, make a centerpiece and all kinds of other crafty things. If you think you might be able to use this colorful foil for an upcoming event, pick up some rolls at the dollar store during the holiday season.

7. Party clothes. The best time of year to buy a fancy dress and evening bag is not two weeks before your big party next May. It's during the Christmas season. That's when the stores have the biggest selection of glittery and glamorous attire. They're catering to all those people that are attending Christmas parties and New Year's Eve celebrations. So, if you know you're going to need to wear something pretty special to an upcoming event, take advantage of the large variety of choices on the store racks during the holidays.

Right before Christmas you can find great party supplies for all year long. But if you're willing to wait until the week after Christmas, you can get them at deep discounts from 50% to even 75% off. Of course, you run the risk that the store shelves will be picked over and you won't find exactly what you want. But it's definitely worth it for the budget-minded party planner. And guess what? When your guests see the great party supplies you picked up during the holidays, they'll never suspect you bought them while Christmas shopping!
