When we think of a locksmith, our general idea is about a person who repairs locks and makes keys for these locks.

It requires a lot of skill to become a Locksmith. Some amount of education is also required. The traditional idea about this trade is that a person would be learning the skills required in this trade under the watchful eyes of a master as hands-on experience.

In the modern times, this trade has developed quite a lot. In many developed countries, locksmiths are required to undergo an apprenticeship program or to have a professional degree before they can start working as a locksmith. But, this does not apply in all countries of the world. It would be always a good idea check the local legal requirements before starting such a trade.

Present day Locksmiths could be divided into three classes: institutional, forensic and commercial. Locksmiths could be self employed or working in an organization. Each of these classes of locksmiths would require different levels of skill. The working condition and income earned would vary considerably. But, to become successful in this trade would require intense concentration and lots of patience. Some technical skills are also required for working with different combinations of keys and locks. A lot of customer handling skills are required especially to handle those clients who have been robbed or have been locked out of their house.

Generally, the new entrants to this trade work on part time basis in the evening and on weekends. This will help them learn the necessary skills for becoming successful in the trade so that they become a professional later on. It would help a locksmith to develop a clientele if the customers remember the locksmith's phone number. Such a phone number would enable these customers to contact the locksmith in any emergency and would not require meeting the locksmith personally.

The most important tool for any locksmith would be the key making machine that makes duplicate keys. Making of a duplicate key requires that it should be an exact copy. Generally, the duplicate keys are not made in one go and would require a number of turns before the actual duplicate key is made. In this process, the locksmith might have to bear some financial loss too.

Many countries of the world require a legitimate license to open a locksmith shop. Licensing procedure would also consist of background check regarding the character of the person.

Therefore, it is quite a long and arduous process to become a successful locksmith
