In the last couple of years, the UK and associated government entities have been plagued by lost or misplaced data that may contain sensitive information. In November of last year, twenty five million people had their confidential data lost when the two disks containing the data disappeared and have not been found. In December of last year, Northern Ireland was affected when the data concerning thousands of drivers details and information was lost. Law firms and advokater highlight the fact that when sensitive and government information is lost or misplaced, the people who that data concerns have a right to be worried. In the modern day, identity theft is a very real concern, and personal information may allow a criminal or scam artist to steal your identity. The latest issue comes because a private contractor broke the government rules and the contract drawn up, to download thousands of details concerning criminal records onto a memory stick. The government form of the data is encrypted, but apparently the private contractor decrypted the data before downloading it onto the memory stick. Now the memory stick has been misplaced, putting the government at risk of court filings by at least one advokat over the breach of privacy and lack of security concerning the lost data.

In the past few years data loss has become a big issue for the government, and liability lawsuits have been filed by an advokat over the data on behalf of citizens who are affected by the lost data. The UK is not the only country to be plagued by problems of data loss and theft since the world has changed records and information storage formats, to an electronic format rather than a paper one. In December of last year, the details of over three million drivers were either misplaced or lost, and at the beginning of this year a Naval officer had his laptop PC stolen, and details and information concerning six hundred thousand people that was stored on the laptop before the theft. The advokat warns that regardless of the country, data can be misplaced, and agencies that lose sensitive data face the possibility of liability lawsuits.
